Blog titles...

Note to all bloggers - one of the things I quickly noticed after I began my blog recently, my blog description "ramblings, rumblings, mumblings, and bare musings..." (which I thought was so clever) was everywhere. I dumped it in a heartbeat, after I noticed how the word rambling was continually popping up on other pages I surfed.

Now, when I see it, I realize what it means. A ramble is when you cannot say what you want concsiely, and you go on and on. It does not distinguish you from the other blogs out there. Use your blog description to do exactly that... describe your site. Or don't use it at all.

Here's my list of dead words: (include any variants)

rant
rave
ramble
ponder

muse

I received an email today from someone mentioning that my site was taking a long time to load. I have high speed access, so I have not surfed my site from a dialup modem. Would you please give me a quick estimation of what you think...

How acceptable on a scale of 1 to 5, would you rate the loading time of this page?

Invitation to start your own sermon/Bible Blog...

A number of people have been coming over from Jenee Woodard's textweek site, and for that I am thankful to her to putting the link up each week. If you are one of these people, thank you for stopping by. I have noticed on my site stats that some at least have been finding what I do useful... I wonder what you end up reading, and what (if anything) has been useful to you. Thanks to those who have let me know.

I guess, this is to those who are writing a lectionary based sermon each week, who prepare the legs off what they are going to say, and then file their beautifully prepared sermon in the dark recesses of your office filing cabinet. Why don't you blog it? Rather than leave it unused, you could create your own blogsite, and post your typed sermon... You could promote your blog site to your congregations members, as well as provide your thoughts on the text of the week to a much wider audience.

Why don't you give it a go?

I will link to any sermon/study blog that starts up (and I am sure that Jenee Woodard would also)... and for that matter any existing. I plan on opening a specific link page for this specific topic... email me when you get started...

How do you get started? I use blogger, but there are many other places you can start also. I don't know the pros and cons of each, but blogger is free, and easy as pie to start with...

anyways... blessings

Blogexplosion Observations

I started using a number of the features offered by Blogexplosion . The first was to block sites that I do now care to read again. Fundamentally I am opposed to the idea of having to waste time coming back another time in the future when I have already determined that I will never wish to read a particular persons blog again. So I happily began blocking sites, and have only now realized that they place a limit on the number of sites that one can block - 25! Where did that number come from?! I feel that since the blogs that the 'randomizer' selects cannot be limited in any other way, at least give us the opportunity to narrow it down somewhat for ourselves. After all if Darwins theory is true, survival of the fittest and the best is to be expected!

Until then I will continue to "surfing too fast" as the banner tells me when I click before the 30 seconds are up!

If you ended up viewing this entry, you are a Blogexplosion member, and you missed my wlecome to Blogexplosion members click here...

If you have no idea what I am talking about and you have a blogsite you have to click here and get in the know...

If you do not have a blogsite... well get one. It won't cost you a cent to get started and you will love it. Click on the "get your own blog" button at the top of the page. You don't need to be a computer whiz to begin... trust me...

Have a great day.

UPDATE: Thomas of BE replied to my inquiry thus -

Currently we are reviewing the blocks. They put an extra strain on the server by blocking individual blogs. We are looking at how to implement a category based surf, or some kind of limitation based on what's on the blogs.
Let's hope that it is sooner than later!

What the heck is RFID?

I just had the most wierd experience. I felt like someone had told somebody a secret and wouldn't let me know what it was. I was surfing BE, and came across this site. Whenever I see an acronym I wonder what it stands for. I looked around the site, and clicked on link after link, but I had to go along a chain of links on external sites, before I found out what RFID actually stood for.

You give it a go, and see if you have the same experience. Click

That is a good example of how jargon, and the way that language amongst a group of experts, can become so insular, that no-one outside that group has a chance of understanding. It's something that people need to consider when trying to communicate.

Well, many of you who know what I am talking about - Blogexplosion - will be stopping by in the process of gaining your credits etc... well, this is an interesting experiment that's for sure. While your waiting for your 30 seconds to go by... let me tell you about my site. The main thing I do is blog on the lectionary bible text each week... you'll also find comment on issues of the day. Common Words - Lepers 10:8/ 11:5, Dead 10:8/ 11:5

Prophet 10:41/11:9

Summary - Jesus send out disciples with authority to perform miracles and the power to cast out evil spirits. Mission is to the Jews, not Gentiles. They were to preach the message kingdom of heaven is near. They were given strict instructions on how to conduct themselves as they visited various towns. Warns that they will be persecuted, and that some will be killed. Passages could be attributed to post Jesus ascension than just during this period of commission.
Similar themes - 'Poverty' - disciples were not to take belongings 10:9-10/John was not dressed in fine clothes 11:8

11:12-19 John - Elijah returned

Summary - Jesus states that John is Elijah returned. That the prophets pointed to John. Jesus comments on how the people did not respond to either John or Jesus ("...did not..." v17).

Advent 3 – Mt 11:2-11- Key Questions

v6 What is the significance of this statement "Blessed is he who does not fall away on account of me", to the remainder of this passage? How is the idea of connected with John, and the remaining content of this passage?

It would appear that this statement is intended for John. It is the final statement to John's disciples before they left to return with th emessage Jesus had given them. John's initial question held a level of doubt also, "Are you the one... or should we expect someone else?". Clearly Jesus is providing reassurance to John who is imprisoned and at the mercy of Herod.

.

The definition offers in their definition of "fall away", a fuller picture of the usage of the word.

b) to cause a person to begin to distrust and desert one whom he ought to trust and obey
.....1) to cause to fall away
.....2) to be offended in one, i.e. to see in another what I disapprove of and what hinders me from acknowledging his authority

This seems to make sense in the context of this passage. Jesus says to John, "You need to trust me."

.

v7-9 In the three-fold repetition of reed/man in fine clothes/prophet, what is the meaning of the reed?

I was puzzled by this reference to a reed, as I did not know what the metaphor stood for. As I read the footnotes in my study bible, It made reference to Herod Antipas putting a reed on his edition of the coin at that time. I searched and searched, and this is the best I could come up with. I am not so sure, as the 'reed' looks more like a palm branch.

.

Then I came across this reference...

7. What went yet out into the wilderness to see? An allusion to John's ministry in the wilderness, which had been attended by most of Christ's disciples. A reed shaken with the wind. The reed of Egypt and Palestine is a very tall cane, growing twelve feet high, and is easily bent by the wind. John was not like the reed. He could not be bent by every breath of applause or displeasure.

Could the metaphor be as straight forward as that?

.

The soldiers who persecuted Jesus, gave Jesus a reed to hold. Symbolically representing a rulers scepter. This article gives a good summary. If this was the allusion intended by Jesus in this section, than he essentially repeats Himself, as this would be the same as the second repetition.

Advent 3 – Mt 11:2-11- Thoughts and Meditation

Doubting John...

I had this impression of Jesus and John the Baptist being so likeminded, that the idea that John would be on the verge of disbelieving in Jesus, was not apparent to me in this passage. After some consideration of these verses however, that impression has been shattered. Three points in verses 2 and 6 seemed to be indicating one thing, that John was a little like a reed blowing in the wind. At least being tempted that way.

.

Firstly verse 2.

When John heard in prison what Christ was doing...

What was Christ doing? Sending out his disciples to the towns around, to preach the good nes, to heal, and perform miracles. I believe it is plausible to argue that John was expecting something more. Here he is in prison (whether he estimated his life was on the line we do not know), and Jesus is the one who supposedly was going to come in power, to destroy the powers that were. Yet, Jesus is doing nothing of the sort, but is sending disciples out to be His spokeperson to the regions around Galilee. John's might very well have been asking himself, was I wrong in my estimation of Jesus?

.

Secondly, the second part of verse 2 shows the doubt that had arisen in his mind. His question to Jesus is, "Are you the one...or..?" Hear the wavering in that statement. John's belief that Jesus was the one was being brought into question. Might I have been wrong?

.

Thirdly, in verse 6, Jesus provides the reaasurance that John needed to avoid the tempting he was facing. Jesus states that, "Blessed is the man who does not fall away..." This word skandalizo is making refrence again to John's wavering belief. Jesus was having to tell John, "Trust me."

Jesus goes on to question the audience, regarding their thoughts about John. Three rhetorical questions in a row. Was John a reed being blown about the wind? Was John someone who bent his message to the audience? No. John was rock solid in everything he preached. Was John a hopeful to the throne, someone who aspired to be the ruler of the people. No, John discarded all the trimmings of life. Was John a prophet? Yes, and more. John was the frontrunner for Christ, preparing people for the coming of the saviour.

In our faith lives we commonly face times of doubt. Is Jesus really the one? Did he really overcome death? Will I be saved? It's at times like these that Jesus says, "Just trust me." It is the simple faith and belief, that despite the temptation to disbelieve, makes rock solid, and unlike the quivering reed. It has been some two millenia since Jesus came to earth as a baby. Many have used this as a reason to not believe, claiming that this length of time proves that Jesus was a fake. Am I willing to hang my hat on that simple word of reassurance "Trust me."? After all Jesus promises blessing on those who do not fall away.

Dear Jesus, help me to call on you at times of tempting.
